How to play Tic Tac Toe with a friend online
- Create your private game. Select Invite a friend on this page to open the game in online mode.
- Copy the invitation. Use the invitation in the game and send it to the person you want to play.
- Join on a second device. Your friend opens the link in their own browser. Keep your board open while they join.
- Follow the first turn. The room creator plays X and starts; the friend who joins plays O.
Both players need to be connected to make a move. The invitation gives access to the available second seat, so send it to your chosen opponent. How to play Tic Tac Toe
- X makes the first move. Tap or click any empty square to place a cross.
- Take turns. O places a ring, then X plays again. A square can hold only one piece.
- Make an uninterrupted line. On 3×3, you need three of your pieces in a row. On 5×5 (25 squares), you need four. On 7×7 (49 squares), you need five. Horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines count; longer lines also win. Winning squares light up.
- A full board can be a draw. If every square is occupied and neither player has a line, the round ends in a draw.
- Play again. Start a new round on the same table. X goes first again. Online, both players must agree to clear the board or change its size once a friend has joined. A move cancels a pending request.
Mouse, touch, or keyboard. Tap an empty square, or use Tab to focus a square and Enter or Space to place your piece.

Look for a finish
If you already have two pieces on a line and the third square is empty, take it. Before making another plan, check whether you can win this turn.
Watch your friend’s line
Two opposing pieces with a gap between them are just as dangerous as two side by side. Check the rows, columns, and both diagonals.
Find two possibilities
A move that opens two different winning lines gives your friend a difficult choice. The center and corners can help you build those opportunities.

Is Tic Tac Toe free?
Yes. Shared-device games and private online rooms are free, with no account required.
Can I play with a friend by link?
Yes. Press “Play with a friend,” copy the invitation, and send it to your opponent. They should open it in their own browser to join as O.
Who goes first?
X starts every round. On one device, Player 1 is X. Online, the person who creates the room is X.
Can I play against the computer?
Yes. In Tic Tac Toe vs Computer, you play X and start first while the computer answers as O.
What happens if I refresh?
A local game restores from this browser’s saved moves when storage is available. Online, the server keeps your board, and the same browser restores your seat. Clearing site storage removes your local save and online seat credentials.
Can either player reset an online round?
Either player can request a new round, but both must agree before the board is cleared.
