Open a board. Find your first pair.

Press Play Mahjong to open the game. A new board has 144 tiles in three layers. If you have a saved game in this browser, it resumes automatically.

Choose a free tile, then choose another matching free tile. Ordinary pictures match exactly; any two flowers or any two seasons also form a pair. The pair disappears and may uncover more tiles. Remove all 72 pairs to finish.

Which tiles can you match?

A tile is free when no tile sits above it and at least its left or right side is open. A tile trapped between neighbours on both sides cannot be taken yet. Brighter tiles are available; covered or blocked tiles are shaded.

The classic Chinese set has 42 different designs: 27 suited tiles (1–9 circles, bamboo and characters), four winds and three dragons, each repeated four times. Four unique flowers and four unique seasons bring the total to 144 tiles.

Match ordinary tiles by identical picture. Any two flowers match each other: plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo. Any two seasons match each other: spring, summer, autumn and winter. Flowers cannot match seasons. This game uses the set for a single-player solitaire puzzle.

A little help when you need it.

Hint highlights an available matching pair. Undo brings back your last removed pair. Shuffle rearranges only the remaining tiles into a solvable part of the board and clears the undo history. It asks before changing the board.

New round starts a fresh board. An unfinished game with removed tiles asks for confirmation. Use the Game menu on a narrow screen to find New round and How to play.

Click with a mouse, tap on a touchscreen, or use Tab and Enter or Space. Pinch or use a trackpad to zoom; Fit board restores the full view.

Look at what a pair will uncover.

Try to open long rows and remove tiles from the upper layers. If you can see three or four copies of one picture, consider which two would free the most other tiles.

Every new board starts with a solution, but not every matching choice leads to it. A hint shows a legal pair, not a promise that the rest of the board will stay solvable. If no pairs remain, undo a choice or shuffle and continue.

Your board and undo history save after each change in this browser on this device. Reloading the page restores them. Clearing site data removes the save; another browser or device has its own board.

There is no time limit, score race or difficulty selector. The game runs locally and does not connect to a multiplayer room.
