Your choice of opponent

A friend nearby, a private guest or the computer.

Open the board and choose your mode

Play Dots and Boxes Online opens Same device mode, ready for two people at one screen. The shared menu also offers Play with a friend for a private room and Vs computer for a solo round. The game loads only when you open the play page.

  1. Open the board on your preferred device.
  2. Choose Same device, Play with a friend or Vs computer.
  3. Gold draws the first edge. Watch the player cards to follow the game.

Three ways to enjoy the same rules

Two players on one device take turns with the same board. A private invitation connects you with the person you choose, each on a separate device. Vs Computer lets you practise with Easy, Medium or Hard.

The online room is private and invitation-based. There is no random opponent queue, ranking or chess clock.

Close a square, keep playing

Choose an undrawn horizontal or vertical edge between adjacent dots. If it closes no square, the turn changes. If it completes one or two squares, you score that many points and draw again. All 16 boxes are played, and the higher final score wins.

Gold always starts. Diagonal lines and undoing a drawn edge are not allowed. The rules guide covers box ownership and tied scores.

Come back to the same game

Same device and computer rounds are stored separately in your browser. A refresh restores the selected mode’s saved board when storage is available. Switching the computer difficulty keeps the position.

For an online game, return through the same invitation in the same browser to recover your seat. Both players must be connected before a line can be confirmed. After a guest joins, New round requires both players to agree.
